8 Skills Mainstream Preppers Don’t Do Because They Fear Losing Their Followers and Supporters.

1st published 22 December 2025, edited 17 January 2026 and re-edited August 2026.

1. Stop attributing climate destabilisation to ridiculous conspiracy theories.

2. De-escalation of confrontation. When Preppers declare they have voted for Russia’s Puppet Party, and then start telling people about humour, while weaponising the Union flag. None of these traits is suggestive of any ability to be good citizens. We don’t need far-right ideas spread by Russian agitators and politicians taking money from foreign states. So the thinking behind de-escalation is that it’s good for your mental health to be less paranoid about those around you. We are already living in collapse. We have time to teach our neighbours. Share in an allotment or join a growing group. Teach them what to do, how to set up community food stores and distribution hubs. Build resistant communities and neighbourhoods.

3. Multiple and low-tech nature-based water purification techniques: Don’t rely on shop-bought water filters; learn multiple techniques for making drinking water from dirty water. Your water purification skills need to be high level to make safe, filtered, and purified drinking water with your knowledge, skills, and tools. Your survival skills for collapse need to be operator level.

4. Advanced wound care and infection control: advanced wound care and tissue viability is the scientific approach to cleaning and caring for wounds. Your 1st aid skills and kit need to be advanced level. With knowledge of non-adherent dressings and dressings that fight infection. Good hand hygiene and barrier care for high-risk casualties. Herbal wound care will be essential as supplies dwindle.

5. Food preservation without refrigeration: Bottling, desiccation, Jerky, canning, etc.

6. Repair, improvisation, and knowledge-based solutions: problem solving. Making or recycling what you need, from Scraps, from Nature, your knowledge, skills and ingenuity. Deep connection to nature helps.

7. Surviving Wet Bulb Global Temperatures without AC: Wet Bulb Global Temperatures are about understanding the risk no one wants to talk about. This is how heat kills.

8. Identify heat- and climate-resilient food plants: We are not going to hunt, gather and forage during and post-collapse, but in a hotter, destabilised climate, the famine garden is populated with novel foods and planting methods learned from indigenous people who live in the desert and grow crops.
