Connection with nature is not a forced, mechanistic process, though some practitioners would like you to think that because it serves their purposes. Some people, because they see themselves as separate or superior to nature, view their survival as a challenge pitted against nature. This approach comes from seeing humans as superior to nature. We evolved to be in nature. The Anthropocene, the last 12,000 years, was the period that gave us the ability to harness nature to serve us through Agriculture, industrialization, and AI. The fuel for industrialism has been the planet’s surface (Forests) and fossil energy. Our fossil-fuelled industrial civilization broke the climate for agriculture. If a new human culture were to emerge during this new epoch, it would be hunting and gathering, as climate change destroys our chances of recovering farming. Regenerative agriculture is as doomed as any other form of agriculture; there’s no harm in trying; it captures carbon in the soil and produces high-value meat. But this only serves a small minority of the population. A global climate beyond 1.5°C will be characterized by heatwaves every summer, droughts and an ever-increasing probability of AMOC collapse. For most of human history, about 300,000 years, we lived as hunter-gatherers in sustainable, egalitarian communities of a few dozen people. Human life on Earth and our place within the planet’s biophysical systems changed dramatically during the Holocene, a geological epoch that began about 12,000 years ago. An unprecedented combination of climate stability and warm temperatures enabled greater reliance on wild grains in several parts of the world. Over the next several thousand years, this dependence led to the development of agriculture and large-scale state societies. These societies show a common pattern of expansion and collapse. Industrial civilization began a few hundred years ago when fossil fuels propelled the human economy to a new level of size and complexity. Learning Survival Skills In Deep Connection With Nature
A transition back to hunter-gatherer life from sedentary consumerism is unlikely to be a choice, and it will be into a severely depleted, in-terminal-decline nature in some places on the planet. Industrial capitalism’s technological, media-based culture does not easily foster the kind of lives we might need to live if agriculture collapses and the procurement of food becomes a matter of skill, knowledge, experience, and specialized expertise in processing it and making it edible. Britain’s countryside has, in the past 100 years, become over-cultivated, over-sprayed, and monocultural to produce industrially farmed grains, animal feed, oilseeds & biofuels. Britain’s ancient coppice woodlands are now in catastrophic decline, and recovery seems unlikely as we head into a new drier climate.

As a former Coppice Manager, I have seen the ancient wood I managed show signs of severe stress; the extreme summer heat causes trees to stop photosynthesizing. Lime (Tilia x europaea) trees in the severe heat are shedding their flowers before they can set seed. Ash Dieback has already killed 20% of the high forest and is killing the ancient ash avenue which I restored from overstood pollards in 1998. One of the primary problems regenerative woodland management faces is ignorance among the public and among people who claim to know all about nature but make no effort to understand this ancient management system. Coppicing has all the potential to make some trees almost immortal. Ecosystem collapse, particularly the collapse of our forests and ancient woodland environs, turns them into net emitters of carbon rather than carbon sinks. Willow appears more heat-tolerant when grown in wet soil. Coppicing at scale could capture and store millions of tons of carbon.

While the idea that humans might hunt and gather, in the wake of civilization collapse, might seem romantic, I find this unlikely due to the lack of skill, knowledge, and the resistance to change from diverse corners of society, including those who claim to want radical change but really only want to reform capitalism. Reformed Capitalism, is still Capitalism, whether it is run based on Celtic, Roman, neoliberal, or Marxist Ideas of Capitalist ethics or not. It is more likely that the final days of this civilization’s collapse present any opportunity for human survival; it will be luck whether anyone with the skills to survive will be there to help, and survival will be more a matter of luck than skill.
